CASE Studies

Green Teams and Green Champions

Since 2007 ecoACTIVE has offered students in primary and secondary the opportunity to develop Green Action Groups who will act as peer motivators and pass on their knowledge about sustainability issues to others in their school community.

Bridge and Petchey Academies both began by setting up recycling and compost schemes for their schools. They moved on to develop their school grounds for food-growing and to increase biodiversity.

The Green Team at Gainsborough Primary carried out surveys around their school to investigate sustainability attitudes and environmental improvements others want to see happening in their school.

Improving Local Environmental Quality

Throughout 2008-09, ecoACTIVE has been working with 6 Hackney primary schools to create features for their school grounds out of recycled glass, reclaimed wood, metal and plastic and promote 'reduce, reuse, recycle' to their communities.

Year 5 at Kingsmead Primary School investigated the different uses, properties and environmental problems associated with wood, and decided to make a Golden Tree with leaves and animals for their school grounds. When they are rewarded for good behaviour, their name is written on a leaf to hang on the Tree.

Pupils worked with a local carpenter to help design and build the tree, before it was installed in the school playground. They delivered an Assembly to tell the rest of the school about their project, and were really pleased and very proud of their hard work.
