About Us
Our vision
Creating resilient, empowered communities, acting to sustain our world.
Our mission statement
ecoACTIVE is an innovative environmental education charity with a reputation for using hands-on, practical approaches to explore complex issues of sustainability. ecoACTIVE's mission is to create a world where young people and communities are agents of change for creating a better planet.
We design and deliver interactive, fun and engaging workshops to empower people to take meaningful action on sustainability. We create eye-opening experiences for children and adults alike, running workshops in schools, parks, community gardens, and with community groups and housing associations.
Our Story
ecoACTIVE began as a unique, locally driven initiative aimed at getting Londoners more engaged in sustainability through interactive workshops and learning activities.
ecoACTIVE started with Prue Poulton and the Hackney Environmental Education Project (HEEP), which ran from 1984-94. Prue developed the unique combination of urban studies, environmental education and active learning which is still at the heart of the ecoACTIVE approach. The Rubbish Dump was a recycling education centre in Hackney where Prue went on to work in 1995, before becoming a Hackney Environmentalist-in-Residence, working within schools to support their sustainability learning. The Rubbish Dump was proud to re-launch as ecoACTIVE in 1999..
Since becoming a charity in 2008, we've broadened our remit considerably. We now run sessions across a wide range of themes, from forest school and community gardening to wildlife and nature connection, waste prevention, and climate change. Our work also includes flagship initiatives like the Hackney Buzzline, our Green Careers programme helping young people into environmental work, and our environmental education activity days delivered in partnership with the Leaside Trust.
Our values
Our community work is guided by our set of Values. They are:
Clarity - we communicate as clearly as possible, and help to translate sometimes complex issues to make them understandable and relevant
Change - we support sustainable behaviour changes and encourage new ideas
Reflection - we monitor, review and learn from each other
Professional - we work in a professional manner, and respect those we engage
Inclusive - we include everyone and strive to promote diversity and equality
Passionate - we love what we do and inspire others to love their environment
Proactive - we look forward and plan for the future
