Inspiring the Next Generation of Pollinator Champions
Alongside our pollinator training for Hackney Housing grounds staff and community gardeners, ecoACTIVE is proud to be delivering hands-on pollinator training for school children across East London.
Last year, ecoACTIVE was awarded a grant from the John Lewis Partnership Nature Fund to deliver a year-long programme of environmental learning and access-to-nature activities for disadvantaged children and young people in East London. This ambitious programme brings nature into everyday learning through outdoor education and forest school sessions for early years, sustainability education and green skills training for secondary and post-16 students, and the piloting of a brand-new pollinator training programme for primary schools.
Growing Nature Skills in Hackney Housing Estates
This spring, Hackney’s housing estates are becoming outdoor classrooms.
Hackney Council has commissioned ecoACTIVE, in partnership with GrowN22, to deliver an advanced nature recovery training programme for 36 Hackney Housing grounds staff. The programme focuses on practical, evidence-based approaches to restoring nature in urban environments—specifically within the realities of housing estate grounds management.

This new year edition of The Hackney Buzz celebrates how people, places and pollinators are coming together along The Hackney Buzzline. From new meadows and bee banks to children learning about wildlife, volunteers, schools, residents and partners have been helping transform parks, estates and community spaces into vibrant corridors for nature.

Over the past year, ecoACTIVE has worked with schools, community groups, residents’ organisations and local partners across Hackney and beyond. Together, we’ve delivered hands-on, nature-based projects that improve wellbeing, strengthen communities and boost biodiversity.
Hackney’s first chalk wildflower meadow and 33rd Green Flag
Hackney’s Daubeney Fields was buzzing with excitement as schoolchildren, councillors and community volunteers gathered to plant the borough’s first chalk wildflower meadow and celebrate its 33rd Green Flag Award. Year 1 pupils from Kingsmead School and Daubeney’s eco-team led the planting with support from the parks team, councillors and the Mayor of Hackney, Caroline Woodley.

Community Garden Training Programme - Thanks to Support from the Bupa Foundation!
We’re delighted to announce a brand-new phase for ecoACTIVE’s Community Garden Network, made possible through an exciting grant from the Bupa Foundation!
Over the next year, we’ll be boosting the skills, confidence and leadership of volunteers across our network through a special programme of 10 expert-led training events. These sessions will be hosted by community gardens themselves, creating fantastic opportunities for learning and for celebrating the brilliant green spaces already flourishing across our neighbourhoods.

Lost in Nature: An East London Boat Journey along the River Lea
On 26 May 2025, we set off by boat along the Limehouse Cut and River Lea, spotting kingfishers, swans and the historic Three Mills along the way. The journey wasn’t just about the scenery—it was also a chance to hear from inspiring local groups including ecoACTIVE, Save Lea Marshes, the River Roding Trust, GoParksLondon, and CPRE London, all working to protect and celebrate East London’s green and blue spaces.

We The Lea Walk
The We The Lea Walk invites you on a rich journey along the River Lea, tracing the untold stories of restoration, resistance and rewilding. This full-day linear walk links key sites of ecological importance and community action — from the rare grazing marshes of Walthamstow and Hackney’s buzzing pollinator trails, to the Olympic Park’s reimagined landscapes and the thriving volunteer-led oasis at Cody Dock.
