Waste Education
Children learn about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling waste through cross-curricular, creative, hands-on and informative workshops.
ecoACTIVE was commissioned by North London Waste Authority to run a waste education programme in 14 schools across seven North London boroughs (two schools per borough) in 2019.
The programme was fully funded, ran until February 2019 and was ideal for a KS2 group such as a school council group or a green team.
About the Programme
The programme provided an effective way of delivering waste prevention education to a diverse audience of people, offering opportunities to build skills, knowledge and understanding of waste issues, while inspiring pupils to take the message home to their families.
The 14 participating schools entered into a competition to see who could reduce waste the most and best communicate their work to the school as a whole. Prizes of £500, £200 and £100 were awarded to the top three schools for them to use on further waste prevention measures. The winners were:

3rd - St John Vianney Catholic Primary School

Project reach

Pupil learning
47% increase in understanding of the waste hierarchy (67% in primary schools, 37% in secondary).
Pupil engagement
322 pupils involved sessions/project teams across 14 schools, with 3767 pupils engaged overall.
Staff knowledge
47% increase in number of staff feeling knowledgeable about waste management at their school.
Adult engagement
560 staff members and 289 parents/carers engaged over the duration of the project.
Staff confidence
41% increase in number of staff feeling confident talking to pupils about actions to reduce, reuse or recycle.
Waste reduction
87.5% of schools took action, with an average reduction of 41% achieved across schools.
