Fully funded environmental education activity days available at The Leaside Trust

We are delighted to introduce an exciting opportunity for local schools in Hackney, Haringey, Waltham Forest and beyond! We’ve launched Hackney's most comprehensive environmental education experience for young people, and we want your students to be a part of it!

Our offer for your school

We are thrilled to offer a small amount of fully funded environmental education and activity days for your school this term. These immersive experiences will provide your students with hands-on learning and outdoor adventures that promote environmental awareness and stewardship.

The experience

Students day will begin arriving at The Leaside Trust, a stunning location along the River Lea, nestled within the Metropolitan Open Land, overlooking the amazing Walthamstow Marshes.

Their day will starts with an ecoACTIVE environmental education session in the morning and in the afternoon they’ll take to the river for a Leaside Trust Activity. We can accommodate two form year groups with the day flipped for the second class.

Leaside Trust ActivitySessions are hosted in our specially built NET-ZERO classroom and/or Leaside's outdoor classroom, both have amazing views over the Lea, the former is warm all winter thanks to our solar powered heat pump.

ecoACTIVE Session : Wild Cities

Explore London's wildlife at Leaside. Learn about local species and urban coexistence. Discover Hackney's habitats, the importance of green spaces, and how to nurture nature in cities. Engage in activities like wildlife bingo, the web of life, and making seed balls.

Combine this session with a canoeing or kayaking session on the river. How many different species can you spot during your journey?

ecoACTIVE Session : Waste, Litter & The River Lea

Delve into the origins of Earth's resources and discover eco-friendly practices to minimise our environmental footprint. Explore the waste hierarchy and uncover simple techniques for reducing, reusing, and recycling. Get creative and inspire others by crafting and displaying your homemade creations. Investigate the effects of litter on the River Lea's wildlife and nearby green areas. Brainstorm solutions to tackle this issue.

Groups can combine this session with a litter pick on the river, from open canoes, or walking along the towpath.

ecoACTIVE Session : Food Waste & Growing

Explore the path food takes when wasted and its environmental repercussions. Unearth innovative methods to cut down on waste. Delve into the vital role worms play in transforming food waste into compost, which benefits plants. In Leaside's outdoor classroom, engage in hands-on activities by investigating the composting process, meeting our worm companions, and participating in a planting project.

Find out more about the trees and plants growing near Leaside. Combine our workshop with a walk on Walthamstow Marshes or a paddle on the river Lea to explore the area.

For Secondary Schools

Food Waste & Growing

This session places its emphasis on the influence of our dietary choices and offers guidance on making more mindful selections. Discover the concept of a food footprint, various dietary approaches, improved consumption patterns, and strategies for reimagining the food ecosystem.

You'll acquire an appreciation for the food resources within our reach, as well as techniques for diminishing food wastage, reusing, and recycling through composting.

Participants will embark on a journey through the culinary garden at Leaside, gaining insights into edible plants, soil vitality, and the art of cultivating one's own sustenance. They will delve into the process of composting, exploring our wormeries and compost bins, comprehending the entire composting cycle, which transforms food scraps into fresh growth for plants.

Renewable Energy

Explore to uncover the innovative energy conservation initiatives implemented by Leaside Trust in their quest to minimise their environmental impact.

Gain insights into the diverse energy sources utilized by all of us and their ecological consequences. Recognize the imperative shift from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources.
