Hackney, like many urban areas, faces challenges in preserving green spaces amidst rapid development. However, No Mow May presents an opportunity to re-wild our neighbourhoods, allowing native flora to flourish and providing vital habitats for pollinators such as bees and butterflies,. By letting grasses grow, even just for a month, we can create interconnected green corridors, stitching together pockets of biodiversity across the borough.

Our Hackney Buzzline project has been given a further boost thanks to match funding from King Charles III Charitable Fund. Match funding our National Lottery Heritage Fund grant is crucial to the success of the project over the next three years. It will support the development and maintenance of the green corridor, including the creation of meadows, gardens, and 'stepping-stone' habitats. It will also enable us further engage with schools, community hubs, and provide more training for volunteers.

Sustainability should first of all be a practice embraced by schools at all levels (procurement, management, energy generation/consumption, waste management, food consumption etc.), and implemented by all members of staff in their daily routines.

Last week we hosted our annual AGM. It was a chance to take stock of the amazing progress we’ve made as a charity and a glimpse at the exciting future that lies ahead.

The waiting list for plots will re-open for new members between 1st and 29th February 2024.

The Hackney Allotment Society members agreed at the AGM in October 2023 that the waiting list will be re-opened for a limited period to admit up to one hundred new members. The application period will run from 1st and 29th February 2024.

GoParksLondon, in collaboration with the East London Garden Society and the Great Eastern Parks Route, organised a delightful event as part of London Rivers Week. The event led us on a journey through lush green spaces and serene blue waters, offering a unique perspective on London's hidden natural treasures.

Our adventure began at Manor House station and unfolded over a leisurely three-mile walk. We traversed the picturesque Woodberry Downs Wetlands, continued our exploration at Walthamstow Wetlands, and concluded our expedition at Tottenham Hale. Along the way, we immersed ourselves in the history and beauty of these exceptional East London natural sites.
